Some albums are made to lift your spirits. Antabus-ooppera is not one of them.
The new album from Finnish underground outsider Elektrus Erektus dives headfirst into addiction, broken relationships, bad decisions and the kind of everyday despair that slowly settles into the wallpaper. If previous releases wandered through the darker corners of suburbia, Antabus-ooppera goes straight through the cellar door.
Musically, the album blends underground electronics, punk attitude and experimental synth-pop. Cheap synthesizers, raw beats and rough-edged production create a world where nothing sounds entirely under control. Elektrus Erektus moves between spoken word, desperate howling and drunken singing, delivering nine songs that feel equally tragic, absurd and strangely familiar.
Recurring characters Anneli and Peltonen return once again, continuing their long-running struggle against common sense and self-preservation. Along the way there are empty beer cans, prescription drugs, broken promises, rehabilitation clinics and the lingering sense that things started going wrong years ago.
Dark? Absolutely.
Hopeful? Not quite.
After all, stubborn Finnish optimism is usually the last thing to die.
